Two stacks of medical supplies are carefully placed into boxes in the kitchen. Some of Cillian Quinn's pokemon had been teleporting stuff like this in all day, which was fine. It gave Tempest some busy work to feel helpful on the rare day off of missions. Airtight containers were carefully labeled in his blocky writing, things sorted into piles for easy finding when it might be needed. Other than a few canned goods, this did seem to be the last of it for the moment, though.[break][break]

Picking up a stack of the boxes in his arms, Tempest carefully made his way downstairs to deliver them to Cillian. The hidden lab's once-pristine table was littered with similar boxes and a few knick-knacks. There were shelves to be lined.[break][break]

"This is the last of them for now." He says, pleased, as he places the boxes with the rest. Walking over to his husband, Tempest steals a quick peck on the cheek before looking over the sorting system that Cillian had started down here. Seeing an empty spot, he starts to work on assisting down here as well.[break][break]

War was coming. One could never be too careful.

Cillian has never felt more like a doomsday prepper than when he's standing in the bunker of his hidden laboratory, sorting boxes of supplies onto metal shelves already stocked with the same.[break][break]

Of course, his Pokemon are doing most of the work. Where Cillian points, his Sylveon maneuvers heavy boxes with TELEKINETIC power. A Beheeyem ordinarily reserved for psychological torture and memory manipulation in Rocket's employ performs the far more mundane task of TELEPORTING those boxes from upstairs, where Tempest Quinn has been loading and labelling.[break][break]

When the boxes stop coming, Cillian knows they're near the end.[break][break]

Temp delivers the last stack in person, and Cillian too pauses in his work to lean into the kiss and return the affection.[break][break]

His Pokémon are dismissed. They'd sort the last of it themselves.[break][break]

"Would've killed for this kind of prep in Kanto," he remarks drily, slotting a box labelled STATUS CURES into an empty spot between REVIVES and HEALING.

Cillian Quinn works in the medicine, Tempest works in the food. A box of canned veggies is stacked next to canned fruits and potted meats and hard tack bread. None of it would taste good. Taste would be the least of their worries when the war effort started and everything came to pass.[break][break]

"Really? You didn't have more time before?"[break][break]

Curiosity colors his tone, head tilted slightly for Cillian to continue when the question is posed. It made sense in Tempest's mind to ask; the assault on Kanto had been a surprise. He would have assumed that Rocket had months, years even, to hoard supplies before the big shebang.[break][break]

... at the same time, many of the stories that Tempest had gotten from that time (like pulled teeth, every time) had seemed unstable.

Several of the crates of medical supplies had come from a heist he'd pulled with Frank Caffey not long ago; though it hadn't gone as smoothly as they'd hoped, they'd gotten their payout in the end.[break][break]

"I'm sure they did," he shrugs, hauling another box — this one labelled SURGICAL — into place. "I didn't. I was just a grunt back then, remember."[break][break]

Worthless to Rocket in the grand scheme of things. Expendable. Not worthy of whatever precious supplies they might've stocked up before their violent assault of the region. He'd treated his injuries at home.[break][break]

And would again if it came to that, in a funny twist of fate, but this time with proper surgical supplies and perhaps the aid of an actual doctor such as caden maher or marcus kotov.[break][break]

He steps back, giving sore muscles a brief rest as he admires their handiwork.[break][break]

"With luck, Sootopolis has enough supplies stored up for everyone, but these are for the brass. I don't want everyone in Rocket knowing exactly where to go if they want an attempt on my life."[break][break]

His smile is dry, the humour grim but honest.

Most of the food had come from a mission with Adrian Malcolm; what they hadb't been able to store here had gone directly to the Submarine. Bless crazy old preppers who were easy to steal from.[break][break]

"It's hard to think of you as anything other than an Underboss." Tempest confessed. Their friendship had started well before Cillian had that rise in promotion. But Cillian had stepped into it, in Temp's eyes, so naturally and gracefully. It was like the other man was meant for power, for control. It was part of what had made Temp so into Cillian in the first place. That outward confidence had been intoxicating.[break][break]

"It won't come to that." Is promised, as if Tempest has any say on the matter. He does know that any would-be assassins wouldn't come close enough for Cillian to even see them. Temp would have them ripped in two before even a hair on his husband's head was out of place.[break][break]

Finishing up with his set of the food boxes, Tempest walks behind the other. He makes sure his footsteps sound clearly on the Lab's tiles before reaching out to touch Cillian; a quick kiss pressed to the back of his neck before he sinks fingers and thumbs to knead at sore muscles. The impromptu massage is, honestly, a bit basic.[break][break]

"... what was it like?"[break][break]

Temp's voice is soft and almost hesitant. Kanto was something they didn't talk about often, Temp didn't push it, but there was a genuine curiosity there. A craving to know what was to come. But there was also room left in the space after the question, an understanding. A silent You don't have to talk about this left waiting.

A smile graces his lips, too quick to be anything but genuine. His confidence has faltered at times through grim experience, but @tempest manages to reinforce negative thoughts with his flattering adoration.[break][break]

"Well, thanks."[break][break]

In truth, he himself could scarcely imagine wearing the status of grunt ever again. And he never would, he supposed; even if Walsh were to demote him, he'd still be an executive at worst. One of Rocket's finest, most decorated soldiers.[break][break]

It fills him with pride to think about.[break][break]

A soft laugh escapes him at Temp's dogged assurance against assassination.[break][break]

"I certainly hope not." But a warm look is offered, a silent appreciation for the ferocity with which his Beast will defend him. He could handle himself, sure, but that didn't mean it wasn't nice to have a guard dog snarling at his side.[break][break]

Temp has learned well to telegraph his approach from behind, and so Cillian leans back into his touch without tension. Basic though the massage might be, aching muscles appreciate the attention. Cillian doesn't answer right away, and perhaps Temp might assume it as a sign he's not going to say anything at all. It wouldn't be the first time he deflected talk of Kanto.[break][break]

But there was war on the horizon, and he's come to accept his past.[break][break]

"Brutal," goes without saying. He tips his head back to rest it against Temp's shoulder. "And quick. We had a lot of time to prep, but they didn't have a lot of time to react. Kanto was ours in a matter of days."[break][break]

From their base in Saffron to an entire region on its knees.[break][break]

"You can ask," he says after a pause. "Anything you want."

Warm thumbs knead, content with the silence. Even if Cillian Quinn didn't want to talk about it, they could always... [break][break]

But then Cillian does.[break][break]

Tempest only pauses in his massage for a moment before slowly starting back up again. He's surprised but feels warm at the same time. He knew how much that Cillian hated talking about Kanto. Quietly, Temp plans to make that one comfort dish for Cillian later; it would still probably be hard on him to talk about.[break][break]

"Kind of the opposite of Hoenn, then." It had been years that Rocket had been here. They had went from a threat in Tempest's eyes to a place he love, a home where he could be with the man he loved.[break][break]

Leaning his head forward, Tempest rests his forehead on Cillian's shoulder.[break][break]

"I don't really know what to ask. I've only been in battles before this." Large scale battles, yes, but that was different from war.[break][break]

"Do you think that Kanto will send reinforcements?"

It was like a cancer. No matter how hard he tried to cut thoughts of Kanto from his life, they returned with a vengeance. If he could not be rid of them, then, why not embrace the darkness that dwelt within?[break][break]

So Temp asks, and he tells not out of resignation, but of a desire to share these darkest parts of himself.[break][break]

See me, and don't shy away.[break][break]

"Completely," he agrees. "Hoenn expected us, after Johto failed. And it's not like we could send the whole of Kanto's fighting force here. Most stayed behind to quell the uprisings in the wake of the takeover."[break][break]

Tempest admits to ignorance of war, and Cillian tilts his head up to meet his lover's gaze with warmth as fingers knead into aching muscle.[break][break]

"Doesn't have to be about war. You can ask me anything about it." Temp's first question is a good one, and he'd feel Cillian's shrug beneath his palms. "If they can spare them, maybe. But they're always trickling folks our way."[break][break]

THEO BECKETT, Asriel Pryde, VENETIA KALEI, marcus kotov — only a few examples of the many agents come from that conquered region.[break][break]

"So we shouldn't count on it, just in case."[break][break]

Hoenn would forge its own path of blood and fire.

"I'm sure we could take them out even without them. Hoenn's League is full of indecisive hand-wringers. They've had plenty of time to do something about Rocket if they really cared all that much."[break][break]

Tempest grumbles it lowly in Cillian Quinn's ear, rolling his eyes even if the other can't see. Having once been a part of that failure of a system, he could say with confidence it was full of sycophants who cared more about their own egos and images than the people of Hoenn as a whole. Rocket wasn't the good guys, they were here to conquer and take, but they were a hell of a lot better than the spineless leaders they had right now.[break][break]

A small kiss is pressed to the nap of Cillian's neck. It lingers, and Tempest considers sinking his teeth into the delicate skin there. To leave a pretty mark for the other to show around tomorrow. In the end he doesn't, having more pressing questions in mind.[break][break]

"There's so much to know I could never guess to ask it all."[break][break]

Fingers dig deeper into knots, trying to loosen their hold in his lover's back. Tempest hums and considers it for another long moment.[break][break]

"What do you wish had went different?"

He twists to press a kiss to Temp's mouth, teeth scraping against lips. He did not necessarily agree with his husband's take; the League had proved capable enough to keep Rocket's conquest at bay for years. But he admired it, all the same.

He shivers at the sensation of lips against his neck.

A laugh rumbles deep in his throat.

"Well you'll never get anywhere if you don't start asking," he reasons, reaching around to (rather ineffectively, given their positions) swat at Tempest Quinn's ass.

The question is one he must give great thought. He tries to avoid such reflection. As he'd said to Aurelie Lefevre, regrets serve only to cause pain. But that does not mean, unlike what he'd told her, that he is utterly immune to them. He simply tries to be.

"I used to wish he'd have let me stay." Perhaps Temp would think he meant THEO BECKETT, but he corrects with a bitter spit of, "Silas." Use his first name, strip him of the power he'd held over Cillian for so long. "I hated it here. I missed the squad in Kanto. But then I met you."

His lips quirk into a sly smirk. That wasn't the only thing that had changed, of course. He'd been given power as an underboss, forged connections with others in Hoenn.

But Temp knew it all, of course.

"But the war... I don't know, really. It's hard, because the Triad showed me how much a little thing can change. Like if I'd never fucked up in Pallet and got the scar, would I have been sent on an even bigger job and killed for messing it up? I don't know. So I guess I just — accept it all. The good and the bad."

"Hmm... I guess. But you have to help me out, sometimes." When it didn't hurt to think about, talk about, when Cillian Quinn was willing to show off that piece of himself he guarded so diligently.[break][break]

Their viewpoints on the question asked show their differences as people, in beliefs. For all the bad he did, Tempest still believed in the good of people. A question to reflect on the past was not to sulk in a mire of self pity, pained and wounded by life going a way you didn't expect. It was a chance for growth, something to turn in your hands and puzzle out and study from, to understand how to make sure it didn't happen again.[break][break]

The fate of an optimist who loved a pessimist.[break][break]

But that truth isn't shared between them, in this moment. Just a fancy for higher things to point and laugh and grin as they sat on lofty clouds.[break][break]

"I'm glad you came here. I'm glad you learned to love us."[break][break]

Us. Hoenn and himself. How tied together they were, basically one and the same. Flawed and terrible but capable of so much.[break][break]

"What did you like about Kanto?"[break][break]

The hardest question of all.

A low hum in his throat, accepting his agency.[break][break]

"I'll try."[break][break]

It was hard to break a habit you've held for so long. To keep Kanto to himself felt as natural as breathing. But he would break himself apart for Tempest Quinn, rip open old wounds so that his husband might see the blood and muscle beneath.[break][break]

He smiles gently when Temp gets sweet.[break][break]

"It was never Hoenn I hated." A soft laugh. "Well, maybe the heat. I'll never love that. I think I hated that this wasn't my choice."[break][break]

Rocket, Kanto, as awful as both had been to him, had been a choice. A foolish one, but his own. He'd been dragged to Hoenn against his will, and the region had become a prison. But through years of love and loss, he's turned it into a home.[break][break]

And in truth, it wasn't Kanto that had caused him so much pain. It was the experiences lived through in that doomed region. But like Hoenn, not all of it had been bad.[break][break]

"The food was phenomenal. There was this ramen place near my apartment that I lived off for years." He laughs at the memory, his smile surprisingly fond. "The owner gave me a discount after a while because I came in almost every night." He'd probably felt bad for the often bruised and battered grunt. Cillian hopes that man and his business had made it through the war all right. "And Saffron was gorgeous at night, with all the lights. There's nowhere quite like it in Hoenn. I used to love exploring the old train tunnels with Faolan."[break][break]

And of Rocket? Of the war?[break][break]

"There was a real sense of loyalty with our crew, after a while." It's why it had hurt so much to leave them behind. "Feels like half the people in Hoenn are on the brink of defection."[break][break]

Maybe it was just because he was the one keeping tabs on them all, now.

"Nothing brings people together like shared trauma." It's meant to be a joke, somehow falls flat to his own ears. Too filled with his own wistful and wishful thinking.[break][break]

Tempest wishes that Cillian Quinn had never hurt at all. He also isn't sure he would have loved Cillian in the same way as now. Cil would have been attractive, yes, but would he have loved him? If he hadn't been forged so bloody and sharp in the hammer of Kanto?[break][break]

He doesn't like to dwell on it.[break][break]

"I think...." Tempest pauses, trying to think about how to put it into words properly. "Rocket is very selfish. But how Kanto Rocket and Hoenn Rocket are selfish is very different."[break][break]

Kanto was selfish from the top down. Anyone lesser than you was an object to control, not a person. Hoenn's Rocket was more humanized, but that meant the selfishness was spread into each person.[break][break]

Tempest wasn't immune. His greed for Cillian, for his time and attention, was what made him one of the most unflinchingly loyal. To dominate his husband's time, Tempest would burn his home to the ground For the Glory.
